A story about my friend’s mother pretending she didn’t recognize her own child when she was little, and all the traumatic emotions it brought upon her young soul, triggered my own memories about playfully harassing my little brother when I was about six years old. What intrigued me most about Charlene and her book was that she wrote about an organization my brother had been a part of for many years and refused to recognize as a cult.
